Cowboy Mushrooms

Sharing is caring!

Ingredients & Substitutions

Mushrooms: I used white button mushrooms in this dish. As they cook, they absorb all the flavors of the cowboy butter resulting in flavorful, tender mushrooms. You could also use cremini, portobello, shiitake, or your favorite variety of mushrooms.

Cowboy Butter: Cowboy Butter is a blend of different flavors mixed into butter, turning it into a dip or spread, also known as compound butter. Herbs and spices are added to the butter, and there’s a bit of spiciness from cayenne pepper and crushed red pepper flakes. This special butter adds a delicious and zesty touch to your food, including these mushrooms!

Can I Make Cowboy Butter Ahead Of Time?

Yes, to make this recipe super convenient, get the cowboy butter made in advance. You will need to double the cowboy butter recipe for these mushrooms. Once you have the butter made, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Then, when ready to make the mushrooms, simply melt the butter in a large skillet and cook the mushrooms!

Can I Make Cowboy Mushrooms Without Making Cowboy Butter Ahead Of Time?

Yes, you can still get all of the delicious flavors of the cowboy butter without making it in advance. Instead, add the butter and all of the herbs and spices to a large skillet. (Double the cowboy butter recipe.) Once the butter has melted, add the mushrooms to the skillet. Stir the mushrooms in the butter, herbs, and spices. Then, cook as instructed.

How To Store Cowboy Mushrooms

To store cowboy mushrooms, first, allow them to cool completely. If the mushrooms have been sitting at room temperature for more than 2 hours, it’s best to discard them. Once cooled, place the mushrooms in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator. You can keep them for up to 3-5 days. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, reheat them in the microwave or on the stovetop.

Instructions

  • To a large skillet over medium heat, add cowboy butter. Once the butter has melted, add mushrooms. Stir to combine.
  • Cook, stirring occasionally for about 20-22 minutes, or until mushrooms are tender. They will have a nice golden color.
  • Serve.
