  • 4 cups fresh blackberries
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

For the topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sugar for topping optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly butter a 9-inch square baking dish.
  • Prepare the filling: Toss blackberries with sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Pour into the baking dish.
  • Make the topping: Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add melted butter, milk, and vanilla. Drop spoonfuls over the blackberries.
  • Bake: Sprinkle with coarse sugar and bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Serve: Let cool slightly before serving.
