- 1 12-pack King’s Hawaiian Rolls
- 3 large eggs
- ¾ cup half and half or whole milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 4 tablespoons butter for cooking
- Toppings: Powdered sugar fresh berries, maple syrup
Prepare the custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs and half and half until smooth. Stir in vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt.
Prep the rolls: Use a toothpick or skewer to poke several holes in the bottom of each Hawaiian roll. This helps the custard soak in evenly without making them soggy.
Dip and soak: Working in small batches, dip each roll into the custard mixture for no more than 30 seconds. Turn to coat all sides. Don’t oversoak—they should be saturated but not falling apart.
Cook the rolls: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Cook the soaked rolls for about 30–60 seconds per side, turning to get an even golden crust on all sides.
Serve and enjoy: Plate the warm rolls, then dust with powdered sugar and top with maple syrup and fresh fruit if desired.
- Don’t skip the poking: This step helps absorb flavor without making the inside mushy.
- Keep the heat low: Cooking over medium-low ensures the inside cooks through while the outside crisps up perfectly.
- Use plenty of butter: It adds flavor and helps achieve that golden, caramelized crust.
- Get creative: Try stuffing the rolls with cream cheese, Nutella, or fruit for an indulgent variation.
