- 1 box white cake mix 15.25 oz
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
- Red and blue food coloring
- 1 tub 16 oz vanilla or cream cheese frosting
- Red white, and blue sprinkles (optional)
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
Prepare the cake mix according to package directions by mixing with eggs, oil, and water until smooth.
Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. Tint one red, one blue, and leave one white.
Pour each colored batter into its own prepared pan and smooth the tops.
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely.
Level the cakes if needed. Stack them on a cake stand, spreading a layer of frosting between each.
Frost the outside of the cake with remaining frosting and decorate with sprinkles if desired.
Chill before slicing for cleaner cuts.
- Use gel food coloring for more vibrant layers without thinning the batter.
- This cake can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
- For extra flair, pipe colored frosting around the base or top of the cake.
