Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix 15.25 oz
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Red and blue food coloring
  • 1 tub 16 oz vanilla or cream cheese frosting
  • Red white, and blue sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  • Prepare the cake mix according to package directions by mixing with eggs, oil, and water until smooth.
  • Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. Tint one red, one blue, and leave one white.
  • Pour each colored batter into its own prepared pan and smooth the tops.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely.
  • Level the cakes if needed. Stack them on a cake stand, spreading a layer of frosting between each.
  • Frost the outside of the cake with remaining frosting and decorate with sprinkles if desired.
  • Chill before slicing for cleaner cuts.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for more vibrant layers without thinning the batter.
  • This cake can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
  • For extra flair, pipe colored frosting around the base or top of the cake.
