For the Coffee Mixture:
- 1 1/2 cups strong brewed coffee cooled
- 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur e.g., Kahlúa, optional
- 1 tablespoon sugar optional
For the Mascarpone Filling:
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/4 cups mascarpone cheese room temperature
- 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream cold
For Assembly:
- 24 –30 ladyfingers Savoiardi, firm and crisp
- Unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting
- Grated chocolate or chocolate shavings optional, for garnish
Prepare the Coffee Mixture:
In a shallow bowl, mix the brewed coffee, coffee liqueur (if using), and sugar (if desired). Let it cool completely.
Make the Mascarpone Filling:
In a heatproof bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler setup). Whisk continuously for 6–8 minutes, until the mixture is pale and thickened. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Stir in the vanilla extract and mascarpone cheese. Mix until smooth and well combined.
In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until smooth and airy.
Assemble the Tiramisu:
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they’re coated but not soggy. Arrange a layer of dipped ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish or trifle dish.
Spread half of the mascarpone filling evenly over the ladyfingers.
Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone filling.
Chill and Serve:
Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4–6 hours (preferably overnight) to allow the flavors to meld.
Before serving, dust the top with unsweetened cocoa powder and garnish with grated chocolate or chocolate shavings if desired.
Slice and serve chilled.
- Egg safety: If concerned about raw eggs, use pasteurized eggs or egg yolk substitutes.
- Alcohol-free option: Omit the coffee liqueur for a non-alcoholic version.
- Storage: Store tiramisu in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Avoid freezing, as it may alter the texture.
