Ingredients

For the Coffee Mixture:

  • 1 1/2 cups strong brewed coffee cooled
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur e.g., Kahlúa, optional
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional

For the Mascarpone Filling:

  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups mascarpone cheese room temperature
  • 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream cold

For Assembly:

  • 24 –30 ladyfingers Savoiardi, firm and crisp
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting
  • Grated chocolate or chocolate shavings optional, for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Coffee Mixture:

  • In a shallow bowl, mix the brewed coffee, coffee liqueur (if using), and sugar (if desired). Let it cool completely.

Make the Mascarpone Filling:

  • In a heatproof bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler setup). Whisk continuously for 6–8 minutes, until the mixture is pale and thickened. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract and mascarpone cheese. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until smooth and airy.

Assemble the Tiramisu:

  • Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they’re coated but not soggy. Arrange a layer of dipped ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish or trifle dish.
  • Spread half of the mascarpone filling evenly over the ladyfingers.
  • Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone filling.

Chill and Serve:

  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4–6 hours (preferably overnight) to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Before serving, dust the top with unsweetened cocoa powder and garnish with grated chocolate or chocolate shavings if desired.
  • Slice and serve chilled.

Notes

  • Egg safety: If concerned about raw eggs, use pasteurized eggs or egg yolk substitutes.
  • Alcohol-free option: Omit the coffee liqueur for a non-alcoholic version.
  • Storage: Store tiramisu in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Avoid freezing, as it may alter the texture.
